I'm Stacy Reed, welcome to my corner of the blogosphere! In the folders below, you'll find galleries of my artwork. I dabble in a bit of everything. I also post things that amuse and interest me, such as videos about art, articles about science and Internet memes... Oh yeah, and once a month I post a picture of my messy desk.

View Article  On Compression

Someone recently asked me to explain image compression. Here's an article I wrote in a series for Tucows called Digital Imaging Part 2 - Lossy Vs. Lossless

More Digital Imaging articles:
Part 1, Part 3, and Part 4

Also, check out the Wikipedia entry for Fractal Compression... that Michael Barnsley sure is an interesting guy. You might have seen him in the movie The Colors of Infinity.

View Article  Hotel Bed Jumping
Now here's a site you gotta love... Bed Jumping HQ is all about jumping on beds. We've all done it! Why? Because it makes us feel happy! If you haven't done it recently, you're not living! Jumping on the bed(s) is the first thing I do once I set my bags down in my hotel room. Only, I'm so tall that I have to jump on my knees so I don't bang my head on the ceiling. Done that before! DOH! It smarts!

View Article  San Francisco in Jello
Just when you thought San Fran couldn't get any more fruity...

Elizabeth Hickok created the entire city out of jello, from City Hall to Alamo Square! I wonder if that wins some kind of Guiness World Record.

Yum.

View Article  Go Go Rocket Beetle!
What, is this guy on crack? Fnd out what inspired Ron Patrick to put a jet engine on his VW... not to mention the 2 he put on his wife's scooter. He says he'll never know exactly how fast the VW will go because after it reaches 160, it literally lifts off the ground! Well, I guess having a PhD in Engineering would have it's perks, I just never would have guessed flying in a bug would be one of them.

View Article  The Infamous Pickle Incident of 1990
Michael and I met with Jon and Jodi for drinks last night and somehow the conversation turned to the time I had to work the relish line at the pickle factory as punishment for starting a pickle fight. It is a story that is decidedly bloggable, so here goes!

View Article  The Art of Willard Wigan

The sculptures of Willard Wigan might be overlooked, not because they are insignificant, but because they are so miniscule most can fit within the eye of a needle. These intricate sculptures, measured in thousandths of an inch, can be viewed through microscopes with a magnification of x100. They are painstakingly fashioned from gold, specs of dust, precious gems, droplets of glue and paint along with numerous other materials including eyelashes and spiders webbing.

His work has been described as "The eight wonder of the world" and "Truly a gift from God."   more »

View Article  The Animated Sculpture of Gregory Barsamian
"In a darkened room I present sequentially formed sculptures on a rapidly spinning armature. A synchronized strobe light supplies the illumination. The images exist in real time and viewers are able to share the same space with them. The conflict between sensory information and logic recreates the state of dream reality." - Gregory Barsamian

Make sure you go to the sculpture gallery and watch the videos for each artwork. Bet you've never seen sculpture like that before!
