I'm Stacy Reed, welcome to my corner of the blogosphere! In the folders below, you'll find galleries of my artwork. I dabble in a bit of everything. I also post things that amuse and interest me, such as videos about art, articles about science and Internet memes... Oh yeah, and once a month I post a picture of my messy desk.

View Article  We Feel Fine
"Since August 2005, We Feel Fine has been harvesting human feelings from a large number of weblogs. Every few minutes, the system searches the world's newly posted blog entries for occurrences of the phrases "I feel" and "I am feeling". When it finds such a phrase, it records the full sentence, up to the period, and identifies the "feeling" expressed in that sentence (e.g. sad, happy, depressed, etc.). Because blogs are structured in largely standard ways, the age, gender, and geographical location of the author can often be extracted and saved along with the sentence, as can the local weather conditions at the time the sentence was written. All of this information is saved.

The result is a database of several million human feelings, increasing by 15,000 - 20,000 new feelings per day. Using a series of playful interfaces, the feelings can be searched and sorted across a number of demographic slices, offering responses to specific questions like: do Europeans feel sad more often than Americans? Do women feel fat more often than men? Does rainy weather affect how we feel? What are the most representative feelings of female New Yorkers in their 20s? What do people feel right now in Baghdad? What were people feeling on Valentine's Day? Which are the happiest cities in the world? The saddest? And so on." - We Feel Fine Mission

Take a look, the interactive site has been well designed and the content is so very interesting and begs the question, "How do I feel?"

View Article  LED Throwies
From Graffiti Research Lab comes an innovative way to make a statement... LED Throwies. These are tiny LED lights connected to a small battery and magnet. What a way to add color to any ferromagnetic surface in your neighborhood.
"The goal of the G.R.L. is to technologically empower individuals to creatively alter and reclaim their surroundings from corporate visual culture in a time of aggressive, paramilitary policing tactics. G.R.L. agents are currently working in the lab and in the field to develop and test a range of experimental technologies for the state-of-the-art graffiti writer."

You can find step-by-step instructions on how to make your own LED throwies at Instructables.com but make sure to watch the videos at GRL. Looks like loads of fun!

Inspired by fractals, moire patterns, ad Islamic art, artist Andres Amador creates beautiful patterns of light in 3D sculpture that just blow me away. Among the vivid images of intricate sand cirlces and light patterns are videos of his artwork in motion. The site is more than visual eye candy; he often offers thought provoking insights and theories when he speaks about his art:
Everything in existence is a consequence of the pattern of energy flow. From the very smallest level of quarks to the very highest level of galaxies, the pattern of energy flow is at the heart of being. We are surrounded by pattern, saturated in pattern, composed of pattern- the patterns that form our cells, the patterns of our bodies, the patterns of our thoughts. When we distinguish a pattern, we are indirectly experiencing the forces at work responsible for them. We often only know something based solely from the patterns left behind. The bulk of my artistic pursuits revolve around seeking the essence of the patterns of nature, the heart of the motion that instigates being. I bring this search into all my pursuits- dance, music, art, and, ultimately, life. - Andres Amador's Statement of Intent

Give the site a good look over. You won't be dissapointed.

Wow, what are the odds? My favorite band, Pink Floyd and the word "fractal" are mentioned in the same paragraph! *swoon*
"Black-light wishes and marijuana dreams: This week, Billboard pays tribute to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, the winningest album in chart history, which has spent a huge chunk of its 33-year existence on the bright side of the top 200. According to the magazine, the album debuted at No. 95 in 1973 — and stayed on straight through July 1988, only to return later with another 759 consecutive weeks. That means that the eternal rainbow-triangle-fractal beats out Bob Marley's Legend, the second-place contestent, by a wide margin. Say what you want about artistic merit, but at 40 million sold and counting, Money, it is a gas..." - Entertainment Weekly

It came like a bolt from the blue! Charlie was caught with his pants down when he tried to win brownie points by drinking like a fish with the nerds. Too bad he had a chip on his shoulder. because it was raining cats and dogs outside which caused him to slip and break a leg on his way home. Make no bones about it, it was hard to know which way the wind blows that day. Poor Charlie. That's what he gets for lollygagging with the nerds. That's straight from the horse's mouth. End of story.

View Article  Downloadable Silence and the Desktop Blues
Man wins a free song download from Pepsi and uses the credit to buy "Silence" by Ciccone Youth. DRM makes it impossible to transfer the song to another MP3 player so he strips it using a cross-platform application that unlocks DRM’ed songs but keeps original sound quality. This sound of silence is now available for download on his site. Will the RIAA make him pay for this heinous crime? Stay tuned!

When you've had your fill of listening to silence, and you're irritation with the RIAA has got you feeling down and out, you can go play the Desktop Blues until you feel better.
