View Article  Librarian Chick gets a facelift

Librarian Chick was recently updated to PBwiki 2.0 complete with a new design and cool tools. I've been getting a lot of submissions flowing in and haven't had the time to add them. Seriously, I need to take one evening and do nothing but add, add, add! Who knew there were so many fantastic and FREE educational resources available out there? Go learn something!

I also updated FOSSwiki to the new version as well. I'm still dealing with some left over text reformatting issues for both sites, but all in all, I'm pleased with the new features PBwiki has introduced. I know I've complained about them in the past, but they seem to have listened to their users and with this new version, they implemented enhanced customization tools and security controls, and also made it easier to collaborate with others. Maybe I'll stay a while longer. :)

Why does PBwiki do this? Sometimes it's on every image on my page too. Half the time the images don't show up at all, and when they do, half the time they have this silly stamp on them.

Anyone have an answer or a guess?

Sick of paying high prices for college text books? Here's a solution!

iHaveThatBook.com is a new addition over at Librarian Chick! It's a social networking site where college students can sell, trade or buy used text books. It's also a fun way to chat and socialize with other students. Don't pay full price for text books! Librarian chick forbids it!

There's a new category over at Librarian Chick called Video Tutorials. It has a growing collection of sites that offer free how-to or instructional videos!

Free educational resources are posted to Librarian Chick regularly! Here's a list of my favorite sites from this week's new additions...   more »

Just wanted to start spreading the news... I finally purchased a domain name for the Librarian Chick wiki! Please bookmark www.librarianchick.com and share it on your favorite social networking sites! Librarian Chick now contains nearly 400 free resources with new additions posted multiple times weekly. If you want to know when new resources are listed, just subscribe to the RSS feed.

Also, I added FOSSwiki as a subdomain, so it can now be found at foss.librarianchick.com. Both of these wikis are still hosted by PBwiki for the time being, but soon I hope to be hosting Librarian Chick on our own server. FOSSwiki will likely stay put for a while longer though. I'm currently adding links to the developer's home pages for each title on the main page , so please be patient while these updates are being made.

View Article  FOSSwiki Update
I've been making some changes to the FOSSwiki and wanted to let you know about them.

For those of you who haven't yet visited, FOSSwiki is a listing of Freeware and Open Source software in wiki form. It has well over a few hundred titles thus far and is always growing as new content is added weekly. I've had some people express interest in editing the wiki themselves. I've decided that the best route to take is to open FOSSwiki to the public. The password is available to anyone who wishes to edit the site, it's right there in the FAQ. This way software developers and connoisseurs can post their own listings if they want. Visitors can edit mistakes, fix broken links and add their favorite free software titles!

I'm optimistic that the FOSS won't be abused, but just in case, I'm making regular backups. ;)

Other site updates:
A new Fractal category has been added with about 25 programs listed, all free for your enjoyment.

The site also has a new header pic. Thanks to PBwiki Fanclub for the script.

Upcoming Features:
A section for Firefox extensions/download sites is coming very soon. I realize these are largely free anyway, but let's face it, some are better than others and some will become obsolete with newer versions of Firefox. The people have asked. The people shall receive.

I also want to add links to the developers homepage alongside each software listing link on the front page. I think this will save a step for those who want to go directly there without having to open another FOSSwiki page to get the link.

I'm hoping opening this site to the public for editing will help it grow in leaps and bounds. I hope you will take a moment to see if your favorite Freeware is listed, and if not, please add it so someone else can enjoy it as well! If you have any comments or suggestions on ways to make this site a better resource, please don't hesitate to drop me a line!

View Article  Librarian Chick - Free Learning Resources
Here's a little something I'm working on... I think it should be ready to go by the end of this week. I just have a little more content I want to put up but you all get a geek-sneak-peak!

Introducing Librarian Chick, a wiki that organizes a large collection of links to free educational resources and reference sites for those with big brains and small pocketbooks. It's for students, educators and anyone else who's hip to learning.

So far there are over 200 resources linked, but by the end of the week, I hope to have over 250 and like FOSSwiki, it will just keep growing. There are free lessons, lectures, ebooks, and audiobooks you can download from prestigious schools and libraries, test preparation sites, reference sites, calculators, information about college loans and more.

If you like it, please feel free to subscribe to the RSS feed so you can keep updated on new content. Also, it would be totally cool if you could help spread the word by adding it to your Simpy, fUrl, del.icio.us, Digg, Reddit, SU, or whatever it is you use.

Update: Just added a nifty little search tool thanks to Google. Search for FREE books online! Get results from literally dozens of the biggest and most complete libraries that host free resources! This will be a huge help to anyone looking for books by title or by a specific author... much easier than scanning each individual book site listed on Librarian Chick.

View Article  Introducing FOSSwiki!
Introducing FOSSwiki, a list of over 250 Freeware and Open Source Software programs. Every program listed is spyware, adware, trojan and virus free. These programs were all hand picked for their excellence, some received high ratings when I reviewed them for Tucows and others were recommended to me.

I've been working on this project for a while now because I needed a place to keep track of all the software I recommend to my friends and family. Finally, the list has filled out enough that I think others will be able to benefit from this resource. I hope to keep it updated regularly as I often come across some really cool freebies. You can subscribe to the RSS feed to find out when new software has been added to the list.

Enjoy!
